Inspired by the famous diskobolos (or 'discus thrower') bronze statue created by the Athenian sculptor Myron, it is the pawn which provides the theme for this themed chess set. Although the original sculpture, dating back to c. 460 BC, has not survived, the original idea has been preserved through marble Roman copies and the Museo Nazionale Romano in Rome now houses the Lancellotti and Castel Porziano Discus Throwers.
